Funeral Prices Sydney | Central Coast

At Serenity Family Funerals we give you a wide range of predefined funeral packages so that you’ll be certain to find one that suits your wishes and budget.The total cost of a funeral varies considerably depending on the type of funeral. To help you understand the cost factors, and select a funeral that suits your budget, we’ve divided this page into 2 parts:

Simple Overview of Price Factors

The major components that affect the cost of a funeral are:

  • whether it’s a burial or cremation,
  • the type of coffin/casket,
  • the number of funeral services (0, 1, or 2),
  • any additional options.

Cremation or Burial

While the average cost of a cremation funeral is slightly cheaper than a burial funeral, the total cost of a burial is considerably higher because you must also purchase a burial plot from a cemetery. You can also purchase an interment place for the ashes of your loved, but they are much cheaper than burial plots.

Burial Plots in Sydney

The cheapest burial plots in Sydney cost over $6000 (near Blacktown); the cheapest in Central Sydney cost about $10000; and the cheapest in the North and East cost about $13000. You will also need to budget for the cost for a headstone or plaque.

Ashes Interment Memorial in Sydney

Buying a place for your loved one’s ashes in a cemetery or Memorial garden is cheaper than a burial plot. However, the cheapest option of all is to scatter their ashes in an appropriate place. Prices for interment memorials depend on the type and location, with the cheapest costing between $1300 and $3200.

Weekday or Weekend Costs
Cemeteries and memorial gardens will charge between about $500 and $4000 extra for interments and burials on weekends.

Type of Coffin / Casket

Coffins and caskets vary widely in price. The cheapest ones are designed for direct cremations (not to be seen at a funeral service). The average priced coffins cost between $1000 and $2000. Top end caskets cost over $20,000.

Number of Funeral Services

Show

There are two types of services that you can have at a funeral: the main funeral service, and a committal service. You may choose to have both, just one, or none.

The main funeral service is often held at a church, and then a 2nd smaller service may be held by the graveside or at the chapel in the crematorium. Each venue will charge for hiring the venue, and the price can vary considerably depending on the cemetery or crematorium.

A direct cremation funeral is one in which no funeral services are held. You will receive the ashes of your loved one and then you can hold your own farewell ceremony as you wish. If you’re after a very cheap funeral option, then this is the one to choose.

Basic Inclusions

All our packages include the following basic items:

Transport to Mortuary

Transportation of the deceased from home, hospital, or nursing home and into our care at our mortuary.
All funeral packages include $305 to cover this transfer, assuming it will be done Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. If the transfer needs to occur outside these hours an addition charge will be added to the package total:

  • Monday – Friday after hours, Saturday, Sunday:   $130 extra
  • Public Holiday:   $250 extra

Mortuary care

The deceased is cared for in a refrigerated mortuary and is prepared for the funeral. $200-$990 depending on which package you choose.

Death Certificate

We submit an application for a Death Certificate and pay the NSW government the $70 fee. (certified copies & post)

  • Medical Referee A second doctor must double-check the work of the first doctor and sign off on all the paperwork. All packages include $150 to cover this cost.

A direct cremation is the cheapest funeral option available because it does not include any type of funeral ceremony. The NSW government requires that a coffin be used for all cremations, but since it does not need to be seen publicly, we use the cheapest coffin we have, which costs $170.
You will receive the ashes of your loved one and you can choose to organize a private memorial service at a future date if you wish.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In these Budget Cremation – Memorial Service packages, the cremation takes place BEFORE the memorial service, whereas in all our other cremation packages the cremation takes place AFTER the funeral service.

Both these Budget Cremation packages include the basic items plus the following:

  • Cremation
    The cremation takes place at least one day before the service, so that the ashes of the deceased will be present at the service.
  • Celebrant $400 ($500 on weekends)

Note: These prices do not include the cost of buying a burial plot from the cemetery. In Sydney, the cheapest burial plots cost over $6000 (near Blacktown); the cheapest plots in Central Sydney cost about $10000; and the cheapest in the Eastern and Northern Sydney cost at least $13000.   • NSW Government burial fee $90
  • Cemetery interment fee
    This is the cost that the cemetery charges to dig and fill the grave, and at some cemeteries it also includes the provision of a canopy and some seating etc. The cost varies depending on whether the burial is on a weekday or weekend, and on the cemetery, and also on the section of the cemetery (there are different sections for each religion e.g muslim, jewish, catholic, Chinese, etc.)
    These packages are based on the prices charged by Rookwood Catholic Cemetery in Lidcombe, Sydney, which are: Mon-Fri $3231, Sat-Sun $3567. If you choose a different cemetery with different prices, the package price will be adjusted up or down accordingly.

Extras

These are our most commonly requested extras, but we can cater to any requests, just ask us.

  • Viewing as part of funeral service
    Free. There is no additional cost, provided there is sufficient time. Most chapels hire for one-hour slots, others for 45 minutes, and 15 minutes of that is for preparation and exiting. So you may need to hire the chapel for an additional time slot, especially if there will be many mourners. Note that some churches don’t allow viewings.
  • Viewing as separate event
    A separate viewing at out funeral home chapel in Hurstville costs $300. Viewings at other locations will cost $500 plus the cost of hiring the venue.
    Note that viewings are not available with Budget Creamation – Memorial Service packages.
  • Order of service booklets (simple, up to 50) $150 + $3 each
  • Newspaper Notice: $50 plus the cost of the ads in newspapers (about $13 per line.)
  • Photo slideshow presentation: $280
